The 5G dream just got a little closer to becoming a reality as an organisation named 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) has already ratified standards for 5G hardware equipment in cell towers as well as smartphones. And the ratification comes six months ahead of expected schedule!

While we are still busy adjusting with 4G technology, the tech industry has already set up a lane to sprint on the latest high-speed 5G technology. 3GPP is an organisation that defined the shift from GSM to 3G and 4G LTE, and now, it has ratified specifications and standards for 5G hardware equipment in cell towers as well as smartphones during their plenary meeting in Lisbon this week. As per 3GPP, the new radio standards will temporarily work alongside the LTE core network in so-called “non-standalone mode”. These 5G NR standards will be published before the end of this year and will then be used by companies like to build 5G networking equipment.

The introduction of 5G standards is 6 months ahead of what was expected and will enable the global mobile industry to initiate full-scale development of 5G NR for large-scale trials and commercial deployment as early as in 2019. The early announcement of 5G NR standards was gladly welcomed by global communication and tech players like AT&T, BT, China Mobile, Ericsson, Huawei, Intel, LG Electronics, MediaTek, Nokia, Qualcomm Technologies, Samsung, Sony Mobile, Vodafone, and ZTE. Hence, by early 2019, these companies are expected to bring in some components and devices that support 5G wireless networks and technologies.

The successful completion of Phase 1 of standardisation of 5G NR standards is completed by 3GPP; and with support and cooperation from global organizations including governments, regulatory agencies, research organizations, academia, industries, and many more sectors, the tech sector looks up for great progress in the 5G world. With introduction of 5G in the market, it will open up new possibilities for the role of wireless technology in society.
