Maharashtra, Manipur and five union territories of India have rolled out intra-state e-way bill system for movement of goods worth over Rs 50,000 within the state today; with which, 27 states/union territories across India have adapted the intra-state e-way bill system.

The Central government introduced the electronic-way or e-way bill system from April 1 for moving goods worth over Rs 50,000 from one state to another. The same system of electronic bills was rolled out for transportation of goods within the state on April 15 this year, which was known as intra-state e-way bill. Two days earlier, the government had notified earlier that the e-way bill for moving goods within a state will become mandatory from June 3, making it a country-wide roll out of the mechanism. So far, 20 states/Union Territories including Gujarat, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Assam, Karnataka, Kerala, Madhya Pradesh and Haryana and remaining UTs have implemented the intra-state e-billing system.

However, the Centre announced on Thursday that two more states – Maharashtra and Manipur – along with five Union Territories will roll out the intra-state e-way bills from Friday i.e. today, May 25. The Union Territories include Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Chandigarh, Dadra and Nagar Haveli, Daman and Diu, and Lakshadweep. This latest addition has rose the total number of states and UTs implementing e-way bills for intra-state movement of goods to 27. Also, the remaining states and UTs have been reiterated to coordinate with their authorities and get the requisite notification issued as early as possible so that the deadline of June 3, 2018 can be met.

By taking this measure, the government expects to boost tax collections by clamping down on trade that currently happens on cash basis. Reports suggest that the e-way bill system is functioning as planned and since the implementation of the same from April 1, 2018, more than 4.5 crore e-way bills have been generated. These bills include more than 1.60 crore e-way bills for intra-state movement of goods, so by covering up the entire nation with intra-state e-way bill mechanism, the government expects to make marginal boost in tax collection stats.
