It’s been 26 years to the demise of late Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi today and to honour him, Congress President Sonia Gandhi along with Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra paid tributes to the former PM.
Rajiv Gandhi was assassinated on this day in 1991 in a suicide bomb attack by Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) during an election rally at Sriperumbudur in Tamil Nadu. He had succeeded his mother Indira Gandhi as prime minister, after her assassination in October 1984. Rajiv Gandhi was the youngest Prime Minister of India. He served as prime minister from 31 October, 1984, to 2 December, 1989. As a tribute to Rajiv Gandhi, Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi laid flowers and wreaths at the Rajiv Gandhi memorial ‘Vir Bhumi’.
Former Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh also paid his respect to Rajiv Gandhi on his 26th death anniversary. President Pranab Mukherjee also paid his respect to the late Prime Minister. And the tribute doesn’t end just at the laying flowers; Congress launched a nationwide signature campaign today for 33 per cent reservation of seats for women in the Assembly and Parliamentary elections.
The Mahila Congress had zeroed in on the assassination day of Rajiv Gandhi (May 21) to launch the campaign. The campaign will last till August 20, his birth anniversary.
