Facebook-owned instant messenger WhatsApp has earned itself billions of users all around the world, and India is its largest market with 200 million monthly active users. Currently, WhatsApp office is located at Menlo Park, California and with a new office set-up in India, WhatsApp is extending to India, and has appointed Abhijit Bose as WhatsApp India head. Bose will run WhatsApp from India. This is the first time that WhatsApp has extended its workforce beyond its California office and the Indian office will be based in Gurugam. Talking about the India office, CEO Matt Idema said, “WhatsApp is deeply committed to India and we are excited to keep building products that help people connect and support India’s fast-growing digital economy.”
The core purpose will be to fulfill Indian Government’s requirements to filter fake messages, rumours and news spreading on the platform, trace them out and develop a mechanism to remove such messages if needed. Indian Government has also asked the popular messenger to set-up a local presence in India to address complaints and appoint a grievance officer for India. Besides this, Bose and his team will build business by focusing on helping both, small and large business to connect with their customers through WhatsApp – expanding the realms of WhatsApp Business platform.
Holding wide experience in entrepreneurship and leading business development experience, Bose is expected to take WhatsApp to the new heights. Interestingly, Abhijit Bose is a successful entrepreneur himself, as he co-founded Ezetap in 2011, which is an electronic payment service company. Currently, he is working as the CEO of Ezetap and he will join WhatsApp India office from early 2019.
