The French star-striker of Atletico Madrid, Antoine Griezmann scored twice during the game against Marseille in Wednesday’s Europa League final in Lyon to land his team with a clean-victory score of 3-0 and clinch the Europa League title for the third time in nine seasons.

On Wednesday, Marseille came in with a desperate match to end their 25-year-old drought at the European stage by defeating Atletico Madrid and winning the title, once and for all. But ultimately, the Spaniards proved their dominance in the game with experience and technical quality of playing football in such arenas – and scored away the cup for themselves. For Atletico, Antoine Griezmann added all the sparkle for them that night as he was the hero who scored twice in their 3-0 win over Marseille in Wednesday’s Europa League final in Lyon and making the team clinch the title for the third time in nine seasons.

Marseille knew they won’t have too many chances to make strikes against the best defence in La Liga, but while they were desperately profligate, Atletico Madrid was invincibly ruthless. For the first 15 minutes Marseille were the better side; they enjoyed more possession than their opponents and won more 50-50 challenges; only to end with no scores. But it was on 21st minute when Marseille’s Andre-Frank Zambo Anguissa failed to control goalkeeper Steve Mandanda’s pass out and Gabi intercepted before setting Griezmann free to finish neatly. The kick-start was all Atletico needed and the team was unstoppable; and to make it worse for the French, Marseille’s captain and creative captain Dimitri Payet limped off injured – giving a harder blow than a goal.

To clean-finish the show, Griezmann started the move when he played in Costa, who found Saul, who in turn gave it to captain Gabi, lurking in space on the right of the penalty area. It was then that Gabi fired it home, sealing the victory with an emphatic one and confirming Marseille’s third defeat in as many finals in the competition. Griezmann now has 29 goals this season, although it was Gabi’s late strike that sealed the victory. This was Griezmann’s first major victory with Atletico and a fitting way to bow out if he leaves at the season’s end, with Barcelona tipped as his next destination.
