“What’s the point of doing this now when the time has gone?” Don’t we hear such things a little too lot nowadays? So here’s an exception to this ‘time has gone’ thing, a person who has defied the rules about the age of education, Karthayayini Amma.

The 96 year-old woman has scored a big fat 98 out of 100 in a literacy test of class 4 equivalent. This particular literacy exam tests, reading, writing and basic mathematical skills as well. This year approximately 42,933 candidates cleared the test, taking the state closer to its aim of 100 per cent literacy. As she lives in Kerela, it seems a bit obvious to expect such happy miracles here as in 1991, Kerala was declared fully literate, which means attaining 90 per cent literacy, as per the UNESCO norms. Amma is the oldest person ever to give, pass and top this test and she’s perfectly flaunting her achievement.

In her own words, “I knew as long as I study I would score this.” When asked about how and when did she feel the need or desire to study and how did she make it come true, she tells, “I saw small children studying…I too had the desire to study. So when they asked me, I said why not! I want to study for the Class X equivalent but have just finished Class IV.” The enthusiastic old lady also has a wish to learn how to operate a computer and how to type on it. It’s one of her big dreams, as she herself said. This Thursday, she was rewarded with a certificate and two Kasava bordered sarees by the kerela chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan himself.

When asked about who inspired her to start her academics so late, she tells us that her daughter Amminiamma, 51, inspired her mother to join the classes. Karthiyani didn’t get to attend school as she had to work as a domestic help and a cleaning staff. In the felicitation program, Amma told everyone that as she didn’t get to study when she should’ve done that, she’s happy as she’s getting to do it now. Very lucky people get such chance, must say. In this exam of reading, writing and mathematical skills, Amma got 38 marks out of the total of 40 in writing and full marks in the other two. About 42,993 other candidates have also cleared the test this year, as per the reports.

Amma not only beats youngsters in her mental ability, but she’s also physically fit at this age and she’s proud of it.
