Zoya Akhtar directorial Gully Boy, starring Ranvir Singh and Alia Bhatt has made an impressive entry with a box office collection of Rs 21.30 crore on the fourth day since its release – touching a total of Rs 72.45 crore.
It could be the easy-to-connect storyline of the movie, or the amazing performances and impactful rap numbers, or even the stunning acting by some of the ace youth actors of B-town that has led to a successful opening of Gully Boy – a Zoya Akhtar directorial film. Apart from Ranveer and Alia, the movie stars Kalki Koechlin, Siddhant Chaturvedi and Vijay Raaz for supportive roles. After a massive opening day collection, that was majorly benefited by the perfectly timed Valentine’s day, Gully Bon continued its strong growth in the weekend and has bagged itself an appreciable box office collection of Rs 72.45 crore in four days since its launch.
The storyline is based on life of underground street rappers of Mumbai, their daily struggles and a spicy-sweet love story – loosely inspired from the lives of rappers Divine and Naezy. The entire plot revolves around Murad (Ranveer), a slum gully rapper, who tries to break free and rise above his socio-economic status with his street rap despite being pushed back and bullied. With the youth being the driving factor for the film and the famous Dharavi backdrop as its core sets, Gully Boy has managed to impress the audience and received an overwhelming response, especially in the metro cities.
The film is doing well overseas as well with USA + Canada at $ 1.5 mn (₹ 10.70 cr), UAE + GCC at $ 894k [₹ 6.38 cr], UK at £ 181,307 (₹ 1.67 cr), Australia at A$ 320,435 (₹ 1.63 cr), NZ + Fiji: NZ$ 83,588 (₹ 40.94 lakhs) and more to be added. Movie analysts predict that with this pace, Gully Boy will easily surpass the total earnings of Zoya’s previous films in the first week – with her highest grossing film – Zindagi Na Milegi Dobaara standing at a total of Rs 90.27 crore.
