IIT-Madras is the top engineering school and Jamia Hamdard the best pharmacy institute. Delhi’s Miranda House and Bengaluru’s Indian Institute of Science are India’s best college and university, a countrywide government ranking of educational institutions said on Monday.

Loyola College in Chennai and Shri Ram College were the second and third-best colleges in India, said the survey of “general degree” colleges by the human resource development ministry. These colleges are ranked first time by HRD Ministry.

Delhi’s JNU which was the most controversial university back in 2016, second among universities while Banaras Hindu University secured third position. Apart from this, 7 IITs were amongst the top 10 in the overall ranking category.

Jamia Hamdard bagged best pharmacy institute while IIT Madras was top in engineering school. IIM Ahmedabad is best management institute in India.

Kolkata’s Jadavpur University is 5th in universities despite of being facing criticism.

“Jadavpur and JNU haven’t got good ranking for raising slogan for Afzal Guru but for doing good work,” human resource development minister Prakash Javadekar said.

The criteria used to sort-out the institutions included teaching resources, research, employability, outreach/ and gender inclusivity. The government said it emphasised on the quality of research and employer perception during the jury decision.
