The Special Olympics World Games 2019 came to an end in Abu Dhabi on Thursday and Indian special athletes scored up the tally of medals to a total of 368 medals, including 85 gold, 154 silver and 129 bronze.

The IPL 2019 might be around the corner, but Indian athletes under the “special” category have made the country proud on global platform and stole the nation’s attention as they scooped away a total of 368 medals at the Special Olympics 2019. The Special Olympics was started for not just physically but, intellectually disabled athletes to be able to compete in any sport. And in the 15th edition, with over 7,500 athletes across 192 countries participating for 24 different sports – of which, India had participated in 14.

The tournament was held in Abu Dhabi was started off on March 14, with rounds of various sports till conclusion on March 24, Thursday. And at the end of the tournament, Indian special athletes had hauled 85 gold, 153 silver, and 124 bronze medals for a historic total of 368 medals in a single tournament. Among 14 sports, the country outperformed in sports like Athletics, Aquatics, Cycling, Judo, Powerlifting, Table Tennis, Roller skating, Badminton, Basketball Traditional, Handball Tradition, and Football 7 side female.

Of all the sports, Indian athletes gave best performance in power lifting as it bagged the maximum number of medals – 20 gold, 33 silver and 43 bronze won by the powerlifters. Followed by roller skating with 49 medals – including 13 gold medals – the highest gold tally; 45 medals in cycling and 39 medals in track and field athletics. It was also the first time that India participated in Judo and Futsal – clinching 3 gold, 1 silver and 7 silver medals respectively. All the winning and participating athletes were applauded by PM Narendra Modi on Friday for their outshining performance, and making the country proud.
