India regained its seat for economic and social issues in UN body with 183 votes; Pakistan didn't make it




United Nation's some of the principal and vital program on economic, social and environmental issues where it needs strong attention, has elected India for 3-year term.



Amongst the 18 nations participated in this program, India bagged the elections in Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) by obtaining 183 votes, the second highest after Japan in the Asia Pacific category. Election to fill the 18 vacancies in ECOSOC was held on Thursday.

Although, the same profile of India was expiring in current year and India was seeking for its re-election to ECOSOC for its further 3-year term. On the other side, Pakistan was too facing the same situation but it failed to gain the seat as it got only one vote.

"Another day, another election...India wins again. Thanks to support of @UN Member States, India re-elected to ECOSOC (Eco & Social Council)," India's Permanent Representative to the UN Ambassador Syed Akbaruddin tweeted.





Neeru Chadha who is the first Indian woman to be elected as a judge of the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea (ITLOS), won an exciting yet critical election for her profile as judge, India's re-election took place to ECOSOC just a day after it.

Neeru Chadha won the election by 120 votes, the highest in the Asia-Pacific group and was elected in the first round of voting itself.

Having obtained the required two-thirds majority, the nation's elected members of ECOSOC for a three-year term beginning January 1, 2018, are Belarus, Ecuador, El Salvador, France, Germany, Ghana, India, Ireland, Japan, Malawi, Mexico, Morocco, Philippines, Spain, Sudan, Togo, Turkey and Uruguay.

France, Germany, Ghana, Ireland and Japan were among nations seeking re-election. ECOSOC is one of the six main body of UN, who looks after coordination, policy review, policy dialogue and research & development on economic, social and environmental issues, as well as for the implementation of the internationally agreed development goals.
