London: Sanjeev Gupta, originally from India has received the ‘CEO of the Year’ award in the UK for his for his successful acquisitions and drive to transform the steel industry.

Receiving the prestigious title of ‘CEO of the Year’ at Platts Global Metals Awards in London on Thursday night, Gupta was also associated with Tata Steel and Caparo assets in the British steel industry. He is now the chairman of Liberty House Group.

Indian CEOs like Sajjan Jindal of JSW Steel and Prakash Kumar Singh of the Steel Authority of India was also nominated for this award but Gupta bagged it.

While declaring Gupta as winner, judges said that they were impressed by his track record of successful acquisitions and his role as a motivator willing to swim against the tide of pessimism prevalent in the industry.

“This has been an extraordinary period for our group as we pursue our GreenSteel vision for a resilient, high-value metals industry. It is hugely encouraging for our work to be recognised in this way by our peers in the industry and it motivates us to pursue this mission even more vigorously,” Gupta said. “I am proud and humbled to receive this award on behalf of all our 5,000 staff who have been part of this mission.”

Through recycling, renewable energy utilisation and vertical integration with value-added engineering activities made Liberty Group a steel leader in the UK market.

Gupta applied GreenSteel business model which was designed to conquer a competitive, low-carbon future for metal manufacturing.

He managed to bag the S&P Global Platts CEO title at the same time when Liberty Group was celebrating their 25th Anniversary.

Liberty Group raised $7 Billion this year by trading operation from Gupta’s student halls of residence at Cambridge University. It was actually beginning.
