We Indians consume a massive 150 Crore Gigabytes of mobile internet data each month and that has landed India on the top position in the list of world’s highest data consumption – surpassing USA and China, as per NITI Aayog reports.
Unlimited 3G/4G internet, unlimited broadband, 1GB, 2GB per day – all these offers run common among Indian mobile phone users and the credit goes to Reliance Jio, truly. After the introduction of Jio, 4G internet, 3G internet and calling have gotten way beyond cheap – forcing other telcos to join in the drill. India has moved past 2G internet, but it is not about which G here, it is about how much mobile data India uses. And with a population of 1.3 billion, well, we do have massive figures, but what was reported by NITI Aayog is unbelievable. So much that it has landed India as the top consumer of data in world surpassing the figures of Americans and Chinese.
Last month, a Swedish company named Ericsson claimed that currently in India per person data usage is 3.9 GB per month or 1.3 EB (1 EB = 1000000 TB) per month in total. And, and Ericsson said that it will grow to 14 EB per month by 2023. But well, NITI Aayog has different numbers with 150 crore GB of data. Although there is a huge difference between results of Ericsson and NITI Aayog, but one thing is clear that Indians are using more data these days compared to pre-Jio days.
NITI Aayog CEO Amitabh Kant said, “Amazing! With 150 crore gigabytes per month of mobile data consumption, India is now world’s number one mobile data consuming country. Its mobile data consumption is higher than that of the USA and China put together”. Although the source of this data figures in unknown, we have surpassed everyone proudly. And in near future, with Indian moto to outburst the population and with internet plans like Jio, we can expect huge-huge numbers to stun away the world with bytes.
