The Income Tax Department of India has launched the an instant Aadhaar card based online PAN allotment system under which, a fresh PAN will be allotted to individual that will be linked with Aadhaar – first of its kind service.

If you have been wanting to issue yourself a PAN number, now is the time as the Income Tax (I-T) Department has introduced an instant e-PAN allotment, which will be based on and linked with respective Aadhaar card by default. The new fresh PAN will be instantly issued based on the same name, date of birth, gender, mobile number and address that are mentioned in the Aadhaar card. The service is free of cost and is available only for few days – based on first come first serve system for valid Aadhaar card holders and will be accessible only to “resident individuals and not for Hindu Undivided Family, firms, trusts and companies”.

All one has to do is visit the official website of IT Department and apply for e-PAN by filling out all required details. While allotting fresh e-PAN, it will be verified via a one-time password (OTP) that will be sent to the active mobile number that is linked with respective Aadhaar card. After completion of the process of granting instant e-PAN, the physical PAN card will be issued and sent to the applicant within some time. The new facility is intended to facilitate citizens in issuing PAN card and leverage the Aadhaar database to quickly allot PAN card for using financial and tax matters.

Alongside the launch of e-PAN service, the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) had notified the I-T Department to extend the deadline of Aadhaar-PAN linking; henceforth extending it to March 31, 2019. This is the fifth time that the Aadhaar-PAN linking deadline has been extended as almost half of the PAN cards existing are yet to be linked with Aadhaar. The ease of Aadhaar-based e-PAN can possibly attract more people to issue the pre-linked PAN card needed for tax-related services in India.
