West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee aka “Didi” is usually seen wearing her signature traditional Bengali crisp white sarees. But she might soon be spotted wearing the iconic FC Barcelona red and blue striped number 10 jersey tagged as “Didi” which she received from Lionel Messi as a special gift.

“Didi” just received a special gift from of the best footballers, Lionel Messi (Umm.. Sorry, Ronaldo fans!) with a special message. This jersey has iconic “10” number and “DIDI” printed on its back. The special message from Messi says “Best wishes for my friend Didi from Lionel Messi”. This special gift and the special message was as a thank you gift from Messi to “Didi” for successfully hosting Under-17 Football World-Cup last year, knowing that “Didi” is a huge football fan. This special gift came for “Didi” last week.

The team came to Kolkata last Friday for a friendly match against Bengal’s own Mohun Bagan. After the match was over, this Jersey was handed over to the Football Next Foundation organizers by FC Barcelona Legends Juliano Belletti and Jari Litmanen. “They couldn’t hand it over to Ms. Banerjee personally, so they gave it to us. We have approached the CMO. Whenever Mamata Banerjee agrees to meet us, we will hand it over to her,” Kaushik Moulik, founder of the football foundation, said.

This special blue and red, number 10 Jersey has been worn by legendary players like Diego Maradona, Romario, and Ronaldinho. Now “Didi” will have that honor to wear that very same Jersey. Lionel Messi has a large fan-base in India, and he is also aware of his huge fan-base especially in Kolkata. Messi came to Kolkata back in 2011 for a football match between Argentina and Venezuela at the Salt Lake Stadium. During that 2011 football world-cup, a tea seller in Kolkata painted his house in Argentina’s blue and white flag, which became very famous during the Football World Cup.
