The increasing demand of transportation and depleting amount of non-renewable fossil fuel has made the electric cars a mandatory future for the means of transport. Maruti Suzuki has already made an announcement for their future plans about electric cars.
Maruti Suzuki is about to set up a battery plant to manufacture lithium ion batteries and they are also planning to manufacture electric vehicles soon. Osamu Suzuki, the chairman of Suzuki has declared many of his plans for electrical vehicles and has also started a joint venture with Toyota Motors corporation for vehicle sharing in India. They will be testing some of the vehicles from coming month before they launch their final products in 2020.
At a summit organized in Delhi, Osamu said that, “We have decided to launch EV in India around 2020 in cooperation with Toyota Motor Corporation. I am pleased to announce today that we will start road running test using fleet of 50 EV prototype vehicles in India from next month in order to develop safe and easy-to-use EV for all the Indian customers in line with traffic and climatic situation on Indian roads.”
For the testing purpose, Wagon R is chosen as a test bed and the structure of first electric car launched in India will also be somewhat similar. Wagon R will be modified and launched in India by the beginning of next year itself, with standard petrol engines, most probably the 1 litre k10 motor engines. As such, Suzuki has not developed an entire model of electric car but some hybrid/ modified models are available in Japan. Like Wagon R, Suzuki also plans to modify Swift’s cars to electric models as they’re suitable for driving conditions in India. For now, the new model of Wagon R is the most awaited launch of Suzuki in India.
