Indian women’s cricket team’s former captain Mithali Raj scored her second straight half-century to win the T20I match against Ireland at ICC Women’s World Twenty20. And with this, she just became India’s highest T20I run scorer, even ahead of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma.
Indian veteran batswoman Mithali Raj now has more T20I run score than any other Indian cricket player – men or women as she scored an unbeaten 114 against Ireland on Friday to win the T20I match. With her and her team’s effort, India entered the tournament’s semi-finale for only the third time ever. With the half century on Friday, she just made it to the total of 2,283 T20I runs to become the highest T20I run scorer in India within a 19 years of her cricket debut. The 35-year-old left behind prominent players like Rohit (2,207) and Kohli (2,102) in T20I score and became the most reliable batters of Indian cricket.
Mithali also holds the record for being the highest run scorer in women’s ODI with 6550 runs and is the only women to cross the 6,000 run mark in ODIs. She was also the captain of Indian women’s cricket team in their first World Cup final in 2005, and also led when Indian women’s team won the first ever Test Series in England in 2006. With all these achievements, Mithali has become one of the most successful female cricket players in India, for which she has been honoured with prestigious awards like the Arjuna award in 2003, and the Padma Shri award in 2015.
In the list of T20I runners, Kohli is followed by current Indian women’s cricket team captain Harmanpreet Kaur with a score of 1827 runs; and Suresh Raina is fifth and former India skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni is on the sixth. Mithali has played a total of 80 T20 international innings so far, Rohit too has played 80 while Virat stays behind with 58 innings only. Among the women, Smriti Mandhana on 929 runs in a young career. For now, the Indian female cricket team is getting ready to jab its opponent in ICC Women’s World Twenty20 tournament in Guyana.
