Forbes has announced this year’s India’s Richest list and Reliance Industries Chairman Mukesh Ambani has topped the list with a whopping net worth of $47.3 billion, yet again for the 11th consecutive year.
The billionaire added as much as $9.3 billion in his net worth during the previous year on account of the remarkable success of his Reliance Jio broadband telco service. Following Mukesh Ambani, the next name in the list of richest Indians is that of Wipro Chairman Azim Premji who maintained his second spot with a net worth of $21 billion, adding $2 billion during the year. Lakshmi Mittal, the CEO and Chairman of Arcelor Mittal marked the third place in the list, rising one spot above his previous year’s rank with a net worth of $18.3 billion and a rise of $1.8 billion in his wealth in comparison of the previous year. The 4th and the 5th place in the list were marked by the Hinduja family with a net worth of $18 billion and Pallonji Mistry with a net worth of $15.7 billion respectively.
Among the other billionaires who were successful in grabbing a place in the top 10 richest Indians list were Shiv Nadar at the 6th spot with a net worth of $14.6 billion, Godrej family at the 7th spot with a net worth of $14 billion, Dilip Shanghvi at the 8th place with a net worth of $12.6 billion, Kumar Birla at the 9th spot with a net worth of $12.5 billion and Gautam Adani at the 10th spot with a net worth of $11.9 billion. “In a challenging year, which saw the rupee taking a tumble, the country’s 100 richest collectively managed to hold their own. Moreover, new billionaires continue to be minted, which indicates that India’s entrepreneurial energy is upbeat as ever,” Naazneen Karmali, India Editor of Forbes Asia said.
Seeing from the view point of percentage increase in the net worth of billionaires, Kiran Mazumdar Shaw tops the list being the biggest percentage gainer of the year with her net worth increasing by 66.7% and reaching up to a figure of $3.6 billion in the previous year. Moreover, her name also happened to be on the top of the list of woman billionaires in India in the recent Barclays Hurun India Rich List 2018 with a net worth of Rs 22,700 crore. The interesting thing to note is that out of the 100 richest Indians in list, 11 of them saw a rise of $1 billion or more in their net worth during the previous year.
