Convicted in the abduction, rape and murder case of 7-year-old girl Zainab Ansari earlier this year, Imran Ali, the serial killer and child rapist was hanged to death today morning in Kot Lakhpat Central Jail. Justice has finally been granted to Zainab.

On 4th of January this year, Zainab was abducted from near her home when she was returning from her religious classes in a Pakistani city named Kasur – some 50 kilometres from Lahore. Four days after the abduction, she was found dead in a heap of trash after being raped, abused and strangled to death. The incident had led to social outrage in entire Pakistan, calling for justice for Zainab. The accused as 24-year-old Imran Ali who was living nearby her home and was convicted as guilty of not just one but a total of nine rape and murder cases of minors.

Following a nation-wide protest demanding a harsh punishment for the convict, the Pakistani anti-terrorism court ordered a death sentence for him a week ago and it was to be conducted on 17th October. Zainab’s father had earlier filed a petition pleading to conduct public hanging of the convict, but it was rejected by the court. Zainab’s counsel had also requested the court to allow a live telecast of the hanging inside the jail, which too was rejected.

The hanging was conducted yesterday morning at Kot Lakhpat Central Jail in Lahore in the presence of both Magistrate Adil Sarwar, the deceased girl Zainab’s father and her uncle. Imran’s brother and two of his friends were also present and an ambulance was available at the time of hanging. After the execution, Ali’s family – accompanied by police contingents – took his body to Kasur. Talking about the hanging, while Zainab’s father dismayed that the public hanging was not allowed, he thanked the chief justice of Pakistan and said that the “murderer had met his fate today”.
