The last date for linking PAN-Aadhaar was March 31, 2018 as notified by the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) earlier; but the deadline was extended by six months and as per CBDT, the new deadline for linking PAN and Aadhaar is September 30, 2019.

On Sunday, government declared an extension in the deadline of linking Permanent Account Number (PAN) with respective Aadhaar – which was made compulsory by the Income Tax (IT) Department to be able to file returns for FY 2019-20. An official statement claimed that the government had received reports “that some sections of the media that those PANs which are not linked with Aadhaar number by March 31, 2019 may be invalidated” – and hence, the cut-off date for intimating “the Aadhaar number and linking PAN-Aadhaar is September 30, 2019 unless specifically exempted”.

The extension gives thousands of tax payers a relief for the sixth time, as the government has extended Aadhaar-PAN linking five times previously. However, the CBDT deadline linking notification has clarified that quoting as well as linking Aadhaar number while filing income tax return will be compulsory, unless one is specifically exempted from paying taxes. Hence, you will require to link the Aadhaar with PAN if you want to file income tax returns from today – April 1, 2019 onwards.

To know how to link the two documents, you can visit the official website – that lists various ways for the income tax assesses. From the website, the Aadhaar card number can be linked with a PAN card number by simply clicking on “Link Aadhaar” option on the portal’s homepage to proceed. Another option is by sending an SMS to 567678 or 56161 in the following format: UIDPAN<12-digit Aadhaar><10-digit PAN>.  A request to link Aadhaar number with PAN can also be registered in the application to obtain a PAN card or apply for any changes in one’s information on the PAN card.
