Condemning the immense violence caused after controversial ‘godman’ Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh was convicted in a rape allegation, PM Modi called for immediate calm in northern states of India.
On Friday, the verdict for a 15-year-old rape case on a self-proclaimed godman and Dera Sacha Sauda chief – Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh was ruled, convicting the godman to be guilty as charged. But soon after ruling out a justified charge on the godman at Panchkula, the governing system and police officials had to face violent clashes from Dera followers. Three states – Punjab, Haryana and Delhi have tightened their securities, curfews have been implemented and mobile internet service has been disabled temporarily, to control tensed circumstances. Within two days of violence that had sparked after court hearing on Friday, 30 people have died and over 250 have been injured.
Looking at this, PM Modi deeply condemned the entire situation and called for calm across the northern states. Ram Rahim was charged with multiple rape cases of ‘Sadhvi’ (female followers) which dates back in 2002 and he was also alleged for two murder cases in 2008. The very poignant picture of this entire incident is that despite such vileness and that the man has been charged with one of the most horrendous charges – it is still supported by thousands of followers; blindfolded in the name of faith.
With a series of tweets, PM Modi has urged for peace and calm in the states and assured that law and order is continuously being monitored. Police officials and army personnel have been posted round the clock in tensed regions and are given a free hand to take whatever steps they have to, to stop violence. Hospital staff, firefighters and other government officials are instructed to assist round the clock and help in restoring normalcy. While all we can hope is – may the people wake up.
