India, a land of cultural diversity respects all its occasions and festivals and celebrates them with harmony. On the occasion of Teacher’s Day on September 5, which is celebrated on the birth anniversary of India’s second President Dr Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, President Ram Nath Kovind and Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid their tribute to the historical figure.

Teachers play an important part in shaping the life of a person in the present modern times. It is right from the childhood, when one starts going to the kindergarten up to the time he completes his education that a person comes in touch with many different teachers throughout his academic career. He learns and gains a lot of wisdom from different teachers at different times in his career which plays a significant role in shaping not only his career but also shaping him into the person he becomes in real life. He implements the knowledge, wit and wisdom gained from his teachers in different fields in the practical life which further results in shaping the society and the country. This way, a teacher contributes not only in educating the students but also in building a strong and exemplary nation.

It is remarkable that Bharat Ratna Dr Radhakrishnan, in whose remembrance the Teacher’s Day is celebrated in India every year since 1962, was not only an exemplary teacher but also a philosopher, scholar and politician. His work dedicated towards education played an important part in shaping the youth of the country in the early years of democratic India. After he became the President of India, some of his students and friends requested him to celebrate his birthday. At this, he replied that he would honoured if that day is instead celebrated as Teacher’s Day. Since then, the country observes September 5 as Teacher’s Day every year. He earnestly believed that “teachers should be the best minds in the country”.

Paying his tribute to Dr S. Radhakrishnan, President Kovind tweeted that “On Teachers’ Day, I pay homage to Dr S. Radhakrishnan and extend heartiest greetings to all teachers of our nation. May our great gurus continue to help and guide us in building a nation and world full of wisdom, peace and harmony.” Prime Minister Modi expressed his regards for the ex-President by saying that, “Teachers play a vital role in the shaping of young minds and building our nation. We bow to our former President and a distinguished teacher himself, Dr Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan on his Jayanti.”
