Thailand: Qatar, the world’s richest country is the new champion of ICC World Cricket League Qualifier – Asia after defeating the Saudi Arabia in final, who was a champion last year. A target of as low as 94 from Saudi, Qatar managed to reach it before time. A gujju boy Dharmang Patel hits the winning boundary.

It was a perfect day for Qatar when net run-rate was not impressive at a certain time, were able to manage it final match. At first, Bahrain defeated Qatar keeping behind them by 2 points while at that time, Saudis had a considerable advantage. Although, Qatar listed at the top after Saudis got out just in 94 runs at the David Buck Oval at Prem International School in Chiang Mai.

Point table is Bahrain completed 3rd, Saudi Arabia is at 2nd while Qatar is at the top by 10 points. On another side, Thailand lost to Saudi Arabia in its home ground while they were able to defeat Kuwait by seven wickets at Gymkhana as Wanchana Uisuk took four wickets in the space of six balls to reduce Kuwait to 7 for 4.

“This is a dream come true as we have been thinking for a long time about playing cricket at a higher level. Luck was on our side as Saudi Arabia chose to bat first when we wanted to bowl. This gave us a great opportunity and the team did their job,” said Qatar skipper while he was in full of emotion.

“We got the job done even though we normally play only once a week but we hope we will have more cricket in the future,” he added further.

Inam-ul-Haq has played 15 years of first-class cricket in Pakistan and also represented his country at the Under-19 World Cup at the start of his career so he is well placed to lead Qatar on their next step up the ladder in global cricket. He also paid tribute to Tamoor Sajjid who was a man of the match today and to left-arm spinner Mohammad Nadeem, who was declared bowler of the tournament for his 20 wickets.

Going back to the final stage, Tamoor Sajjad and Dharmang Patel had an unbeaten 5th wicket partnership in which Tamoor struck 28* while Dharmang was steady at 15* with 3 stunning boundaries. From a perilous position of 24 for 4 Qatar had thrown caution to the wind and scored another 72 runs in less than 12 overs.

Dharmang Patel is an unmatched talent of Qatar cricket team who has played Domestic Cricket conducted by BCCI in India (Gujarat) for 5 years. He was born and brought up in a small town of Gujarat with bigger desires. After heading towards Qatar as a petro-chemical executive, he started his passion again by playing cricket for Qatar. He is the extraordinary fielder, especially at cover and hardly misses the run-out chance. Additionally, he bats at middle order and never leaves his end till last. He is technically sound in batting phenomenon and plays a vital role in chasing runs.

All seven teams had benefited greatly from more than a week of competitive cricket and all will be hoping for further opportunities but it will be champions Qatar who will be progressing into Division Five of the ICC World Cricket League.
