The Central Bank has officially announced today that newly denominated Rs 200 currency will be introduced on Friday, i.e. tomorrow! To our surprise, the note is bright orange in colour and not blue – wow RBI is like one box of surprises!
Just yesterday, the news of release of Rs 200 notes coming by September first week was spread but voila – today, the Finance Ministry said during a press notification that the RBI will release the new notes tomorrow. Oh and remember how we all posted pictures of those indigo-blue notes? Yeah, well those were fake – the actual new Rs 200 notes are inked yellow-orange as base notes and will be roughly the same size as of the new Rs 500 notes. The new denomination is expected to reduce the immense burden of Rs 100 notes for daily use and smaller cash payments.
This new note is themed as per the latest Mahatma Gandhi series which was used in new Rs 500 and Rs 2000 notes post demonetisation, with the signature of RBI Governor Urjit Patel. On the front will be a portrait of Mahatma Gandhi at the centre and Ashoka Pillar emblem, both will be embossed for aiding visually impaired citizens. The base colour of these notes is ‘bright yellow’, although it looks more orange from pictures – but whatever, we are going to find it out tomorrow anyway. On the back side, the motif of Sanchi Stupa is featured among other designs, geometric patterns aligning with the overall colour scheme.
Circulation of these notes will ease out the shortage raised after demonetisation in November 2016, after which just 84% of total currency was released back. We are also expecting new edition of Rs 50 notes and let’s just hope they surprise us with colour in this one too. Anyway, since November 4th, 2017 – this will make a total of fourth new release from RBI, that’s way too much in terms of introducing new currency. And probably we are the only generation till date who have witnessed such a major currency change within such a short time period – consider yourself lucky, rejoice and wait for the orange new notes.
