Emerged as a teen superstar, Selena Gomez revealed on Thursday that she had undergone a kidney transplant as she was battling with a chronic immune disease – lupus. And the donor was none but her very best friend since years and TV actress Francia Raisa.
25-year-old American popstar Selena Gomez had been staying off the camera since summer and has struggled with career and show biz because if an autoimmune condition called Lupus. A medical condition where the immune system attacks body cells instead if bacteria and viruses. The kidneys which are responsible to flush out waste and drugs from body as well as regulate the flow of key hormones, vitamins and RBC fails. This could lead to life-threatening situations and it becomes crucial to transplant kidney from a donor who is willing to donate as well as matches biologically.
Selena was in need of a donor to recover from lupus and in her difficult time, her best friend and American TV star Francia Raisa stepped ahead and selflessly donated one of her healthy kidneys to Selena. The friendship between Selena and 29-year-old Francia started 14 years ago when they met while doing charity at Children’s Hospital in Los Angeles. While Selena presumed her famed popstar career, Francia became a TV actress and appeared in shows like The Secret Life of the American Teenager and will soon be starring in Yara Shahidi’s Black-ish spin-off, Grown-ish. But despite busy career schedules, the girls always remained in touch and together as best friends. Francia says that at the age of 16, Selena became not just her best friend but her family and they are going to be sisters forever.
I’m very aware some of my fans had noticed I was laying low for part of the summer and questioning why I wasn’t promoting my new music, which I was extremely proud of. So I found out I needed to get a kidney transplant due to my Lupus and was recovering. It was what I needed to do for my overall health. Finding about Selena’s chronic disorder and emergent requirement of kidney, Raisa stepped ahead without thinking for another second and gave away her kidney to her best friend – saving her life. Selena even posted an Instagram picture lying on hospital beds with Raisa, side by side, recovering from the surgery together. Their glorious friendship really deserve a toast and a wish to last forever.
