Actors and actresses turning up film producers is a trend in Bollywood that has not left superstars like Shah Rukh Khan, Salman Khan, Aamir Khan, Deepika Padukone and Priyanka Chopra. The latest entre in the bandwagon is Shahid Kapoor, who will debut as a producer with a biopic on Dingko Singh.

Biopics are the new genre in Bollywood, from Mary Kom, to Bhaag Milka Bhaag, Dangal, Sanju and MS Dhoni: An Untold Story. And the other new trend among the popular faces of B-town is trying hands on film production. While the Khans have been in film production since quite some time, Bollywood has seen some new producers like Deepika Padukone, Anushka Sharma and Priyanka Chopra. And what Shahid Kapoor is up to, is an amalgamation of both these latest filmy trends – a biopic produced by an actor-turned-producer.

As per reports, Shahid Kapoor is turning producer with Raja Krishna Menon directorial biopic based on the life of the life of legendary Manipuri boxer Ngangom Dingko Singh. The actor had spent some time with Dingko Singh last year to better understand his life as one of the most outstanding boxers that the country has ever produced. Shahid is already owning the rights of this sport biopic, and have joined hands with his director Raja Krishna Menon for co-producing the film. However, the film is still in scripting stages and has no plans to be launched this year.

The story of the Dingko Singh biopic will revolve around how he won a gold medal at Bangkok Asian Games in Thailand in 1998 at a mere age of 19 – despite being born in extremely poor financial conditions. Dingko was awarded the Padma Shri in 2013, and he currently works as the SAI Special Area Games (SAG) Centre in Khuman Lampak, Imphal.
