On Thursday, Supreme Court ruled that Right to Privacy is the Fundamental Right of every Indian citizen. This decision was based on the group of nine people from CJI. Let us dive-deep to these Judges.

Chief Justice JS Khehar

Jagdish Singh Khehar is the first judge from Sikh Community to hold top most decision maker in apex court. Apart from Right to Privacy, JS Khehar gave important decisions on 2G Spectrum and pleaded guilty to Sahara chief Subrata Roy. He has served as Chief Justice of Karnataka High Court prior.

Justice J Chelameswar

He is the third most senior judge of Supreme Court. Earlier, he served as a Chief Justice of Gauhati High Court from May 2007 to March 2010. Alongwith Justice RF Nariman, Chelameswar removed Section 66 (A) of the Information Technology Act which gave full powers to police to arrest for the anti-social activity carried on internet.

Justice SA Bobde

Being experienced as Chief Justice in Bombay High Court and Madhya Pradesh High Court, Bobde was a part of team where Aadhaar card was ruled as ‘not mandatory’ for basic government services. He argued Senior lawyer Gopal Subramanium for liberty and privacy, for which he was convinced on “pre-existing natural and inherent value” that the Constitution has recognized.

Justice RK Agrawal

Justice RK Agrawal was appointed to the Supreme Court on February 17, 2014. In October 2013, he was appointed the acting Chief Justice of the Madras High Court.

Justice Rohinton Fali Nariman

Senior Counsel of Supreme Court, Rohinton Fali Nariman is the successor of his father Fali S Nariman, appointed as a judge on 7th July 2014. He is also know as scholar of Zoroastrian faith, was a bench member of updating Section 66 (A) of the Information Technology Act. He also played vital role in Triple Talaq decision.

Justice Abhay Manohar Sapre

He was appointed by ex-Prez Pranad Mukherjee. Prior to it, he served as the Chief Justice of the Gauhati High Court and also as the first ever Chief Justice of the Manipur High Court.

Justice DY Chandrachud

Served as Chief Justice in Allahabad High Court and a judge in Bombay High Court, he is expert in human rights and its protection. He explained that he can put bar to bedroom where he and his wife spends time but cannot stop his children from going to school as it comes under Right to Education Law.

Justice Sanjay Kishan Kaul

He joined apex court this year’s February and earlier he served as Chief Justice of Punjab and Haryana High Court, followed by Madras High Court. He also served as judge in Delhi High Court. He once rejected the petition against painter MF Hussain accusing him of obscenity in a painting. He strongly believes that freedom of speech has no meaning if there is no freedom after speech.

Justice S Abdul Nazeer

Started his career as Advocate in 1983, he was given extra charge as Additional Judge in Karnataka High Court. Then, he conquered his position as permanent. Joined apex court in 2017, he was the only Muslim judge on the multi-faith five-judge bench that struck down instant Triple Talaq.
