The CBI Director Alok Verma case

Just a day after the Supreme Court reinstated the exiled CBI Director 1 Alok Verma, a high-powered section panel headed by PM Modi removed Verma as the chief of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).

On Thursday, Alok Verma had returned to his 10th floor office at the CBI headquarters in Delhi after a three-month long compulsory leave ordered by the Supreme Court in October 2018 over a corruption feud with CBI's deputy director Rakesh Asthana. On Tuesday, the Supreme Court had revoked the Central Vigilance Commission order of divesting Alok Verma as chief of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and instated Verma as CBI director, conditionally – in which, he was not allowed to carry out "any major policy decisions until a high-powered select committee comprising the Prime Minister, the Leader of Opposition and the Chief Justice of India meet and decide on his status".

Following up the Alok Verma case immediately, the high-powered section panel headed by PM Modi and comprising of Justice A K Sikri and Congress leader Mallikarjun Kharge decided to remove the CBI chief from his post with charges of "corruption and dereliction of duty" with 2:1 votes. For the residual period of the former CBI chief's tenure till January 31st, he has been posted as the director general, fire and services, civil defence and home guards. The decision was announced on Thursday, making Verma to be the first ever CBI director in the history to face such an action.

There were a total of eight charges mentioned in the CVC report against the 1979-batch AGMUT cadre IPS officer, including corruption, criminal misconduct, interference in sensitive cases, shielding bug defaulters and other offences. M Nageshwara Rao will take over the duties of the director to act as interim director until the appointment of a new chief for the central agency. Meanwhile, the Opposition parties claims the abrupt sacking of the CBI chief without giving him a chance to represent his case in front of the panel as an inequitable decision.
