The voting for Vice Presidential Election 2017 has already began at 10 PM at Parliamentary House, Delhi and the winner will be appointed as the ex-officio of the Rajya Sabha; it is Venkaiah Naidu v/s Gopal Krishna Gandhi, today.
It is time to reform the presidential squad of India and the contest is between India’s ruling National Democratic Alliance candidate – south Indian BJP activist – Venkaiah Naidu and the united Opposition candidate – grandson of the father of nation Mahatma Gandhi – Gopal Krishna Gandhi. Naidu is a former Indian minister and has been a long-term BJP leader in the southern face of India, making him a popular face at national level; whereas, Gandhi has been a new face but with the dignity of being the grandson of India’s pre-independence icon Mahatma Gandhi and a prominent Congress member.
Naidu seems to have weight on his side as he is backed with a majority of 281 lawmakers in the 545-member Lok Sabha and is also the single largest party in Rajya Sabha. But Congress is the second largest party in Rajya Sabha and has the backing of Nitish Kumar’s JDU and BJD which proves to be an interesting note in the election and might also prove to be pivotal for the results. In the dummy elections conducted by NDA yesterday, as many as 16 votes were rejected because of ‘errors’, so no clear winner can be declared yet.
The election is conducted through a secret ballot by the members of the Electoral College consisting of the members of both Houses of Parliament in accordance with the system of proportional representation by means of the single transferable vote. Also, consider the possible cross voting from both parties, the VP election is going to be way more interesting than the Presidential Election which had a clear edge in favour of BJP’s Kovind against UPA candidate Meira Kumar. The result will be formally declared at 7 PM today, be we will keep updating sooner.
