The vice president of the giant messaging app WhatsApp, Mr Chris Daniels confirmed yesterday that whatsapp is going to place ads in the status section of the app.
As per Daniels, this additional feature is going to be a means of monetisation for the company and a way for business to reach people via whatsapp. However, no specific date or time is announced by the company related to this update of the app so far. Considering that whatsapp has billions of users (over 1.5 billion, to be specific), the Indian market itself reaching to more than 250 million users, this feature would definitely turn out to be good for the app. The news of advertisements to be displayed in the status section have been heard since last month. This feature allows one to share content that would disappear after 24 hours, and hence it can be a good platform for the app to make business reach to the users by this feature.
The WhatsApp Status feature was added and redesigned during last year to introduce images, videos, and GIFs in addition to texts, inspired by the Instagram Stories feature, which in turn is ‘inspired’ from Snapchat Stories feature. According to the news, the advertisements will be powered by Facebook’s advertising system itself. In addition to this new update that serves advertisements to the users, Daniels has also given an e-mail interview to Shelley Singh, discussing all the critical issues, from encryption to fake news and payments service to monetising India operations. They’ve been trying hard to protect the privacy of the users and curb malicious practices at the same time, by enabling certain features such as forwarded labels, reduced forward limits etc.
So in addition to other features, as the only app kept ad-free till now may carry advertisements from 2019, let’s see how is it welcomed by the users.
