World’s tallest bridge. Thinking of France, Russia or China? Well, it is in India this time. The world’s tallest railway bridge which is said to be 35 metres taller than Eiffel Tower is under construction in India at Chenab-Jammu and Kashmir. The lanky bridge is expected to complete within two years that is by 2019 and will mark to be the tallest railway bridge in world, easily surpassing the current record of Shuibai bridge in China.

The Chenab bridge will span over the Chenab river at a massive height of 359 metres (1178 ft) and will connect Bakkal in Jammu’s Katra with Kauri in Srinagar. The massive arch shaped steel and concrete bridge which will use over 24000 tonnes of steel is being built at a cost of Rs 1100 Crore! The 1.315 km long bridge will be capable of withstanding train running at wind speeds of up to 260 kmph and the engineering marvel will be a crucial link of the Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla rail link project.

The construction of this lofty bridge is probably the most challenging part for the Indian Railways of the Udhampur-Srinagar rail project but once completed, it will be a remarkable engineering whiz. The steel used in construction of bridge is 66 mm blast-proof to stand still even during terror attacks; the steel to stands still no matter what. The bridge can also resist extremely low temperatures and high wind speeds. All these features will ensure the safety of bridge in the fierce and brutal climates and terror-prone zones of the Valley.

The concrete pillars will be painted with special corrosion resistant paint which will keep the pillars intact even when submerged in the river water for 15 years. According to the plan, a ring of aerial security will be provided to safeguard the bridge. An online monitoring and warning system will be installed on the bridge to protect the passengers and train in critical conditions. Footpaths and cycle trails will be built adjacent to it.

The Chenab bridge is being forged and within two years, it will break the record and dwarf the 275m-high Beipan river Shuibai bridge in China.
